One-on-One MAP & SSAT Prep

Your child solves MAP and SSAT questions to find the sections where they make the most mistakes, then works on those sections again one-on-one with an instructor.

Who this class is for

This class is for students with the MAP or SSAT coming up who keep getting questions wrong in the same section or run out of time before they finish.

What your child learns in each test section

If your child is preparing for both tests, more class time goes to the sections they find harder.

MAP: what your child learns in each section

The MAP measures your child's achievement in each section.

What your child learns in MAP Reading, Language, and Math and in SSAT Verbal, Reading, Quantitative, and Writing
  • Section: Reading

What your child learns: Finding main ideas and key details, inferring what the passage doesn't say directly, and working out word meanings and the author's purpose and evidence

  • Section: Language

What your child learns: Learning parts of speech, sentence structure, verb tense, and subject-verb agreement, and practicing punctuation and fixing sentences with errors

  • Section: Math

What your child learns: Solving problems with numbers, fractions, decimals, ratios, and percents, and setting up expressions and equations to solve word problems

Once your child has covered all three MAP sections, they practice pacing on mixed sets of questions.

SSAT: what your child learns in each section

What your child learns in MAP Reading, Language, and Math and in SSAT Verbal, Reading, Quantitative, and Writing
  • Section: Verbal

What your child learns: Learning synonyms and word roots, prefixes, and suffixes, and practicing how to rule out wrong answer choices on the Analogies questions

  • Section: Reading

What your child learns: Reading long passages and answering questions about the main idea, inferences, and the author's tone and purpose

  • Section: Quantitative

What your child learns: Practicing arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data interpretation, plus problems that take several steps to solve

  • Section: Writing

What your child learns: Practicing how to organize a response for the SSAT Writing Sample

Solve with the instructor, then review mistakes

The five steps of a One-on-One MAP & SSAT Prep class: review last homework, learn concepts and strategies, solve problems together, break down wrong answers, and set the next homework
  1. Step: Review last homework

At this step, your child: Goes over the homework with the instructor, checking how many they got right, which ones they got wrong, and how long each one took.

  2. Step: Learn concepts and strategies

At this step, your child: Reviews the strategy for each question type and the concepts it calls for.

  3. Step: Solve problems together

At this step, your child: Works problems alongside the instructor and explains out loud why they chose each answer.

  4. Step: Break down wrong answers

At this step, your child: Writes down why each answer was wrong, which answer choices were confusing, and which questions took too long.

  5. Step: Set the next homework

At this step, your child: Sets the questions to solve, the words to memorize, and the videos and Study Guide sections to go through before the next class.

Once your child has studied every section they're preparing for, they gather the questions they got wrong in class and on homework and go over them again. See how parents get progress updates

Online question bank (optional)

At home, your child answers questions section by section under the same conditions as the online test. The instructor checks the results saved there when preparing the next class. It's a separate paid account, so we'll decide in consultation whether your child uses it.
