What your child writes at the elementary levels

  • G2–3: English stories from their experiences and ideas

Your child adds who, when, where, and what to describe each scene clearly. They finish English stories with a beginning, middle, and end.

  • G4–5: Writing that explains and compares information

Your child reads English sources and notes only what they need to explain or compare. They write paragraphs in an order readers can follow.

  • Plan, draft, and rewrite after written corrections

Your child gathers ideas in a mind map and writes an English draft. They use the instructor's written corrections to add what they left out, fix errors, and rewrite.

Social studies and science topics your child reads about

G2–3

  • Maps and geography, world cultures
  • Famous people, goods and services
  • Habitats, life cycles
  • States of matter, the solar system

G4–5

  • Ancient civilizations, basics of government
  • Basics of US history, trade
  • Earth science, energy and forces
  • Body systems, ecosystems

Your child reads English texts on social studies and science topics to find content for their own writing. We set how deep the topics go and how long the readings are by your child's reading and writing level.

Math Lab

Math Lab: Elementary Math

Your child first reviews the elementary math concepts from the Korean curriculum, then solves the same material again with English math terms and English word problems. It's a good fit if your child often gets stuck on problems written in English or on word problems, or finds school units hard to solve alone.

What your child learns in each grade
  1. G1–2Basic operations, a feel for shapes, finding patternsBasic Math Vocabulary
  2. G3–4Fractions and decimals, basic shapes, simple problem solvingEasy Word Problems in English
  3. G5–6Ratios and proportions, basic equations, 3D shapesPre-Algebra

How your child learns one concept, step by step

  1. Check the concept
  2. Solve key problems
  3. Explain how they solved it
  4. Find why an answer was wrong
  5. Solve it again without help

Extra practice, depending on your child's level

  • Find the conditions in English word problems

Your child separates what's given from what to find in an English problem and turns it into an equation.

  • Spend more time on hard units

Your child spends extra time on units they couldn't solve alone and moves on to applied problems in units they understand.

  • Take on harder problems

Students in grades 1–4 solve SCAT-style and Math Kangaroo problems, and students in grades 5–6 solve multi-step reasoning problems.

Book Club

Book Club: English Reading

In Book Club, children read English books and share what they understood out loud and in writing. Elementary students learn at two levels, Developing (G1–3) and Independent (G4–6), and we choose your child's class and books by their current reading level.

What your child learns in each grade
  1. Pre-K–KLearning words and phrases from picture books and storiesEarly
  2. G1–3Reading easy chapter books alone and writing responsesDevelopingElementary school
  3. G4–6Writing with evidence and discussing booksIndependentElementary school
  4. G7 and upCritiquing advanced fiction and nonfiction, and writing research papersCritical

What your child learns at the elementary levels

  • Developing (G1–3)

Your child reads short chapter books alone and answers questions about the plot and context. They summarize what happened and write how they felt.

  • Independent (G4–6)

Your child reads more complex books and asks questions about social studies, science, and history topics. They write and discuss opinions with evidence from the book.

Example: how your child reads the book Restart, step by step

  1. Learn key words and example sentences
  2. Get to know the author and characters
  3. Read the book
  4. Put events in the order they happened
  5. Look at how characters change and the conflicts they face

What your child learns in each subject

Each subject covers different elementary school material and is taught in its own way.

  • Math

Number sense and operations; fractions, decimals, and shapes; ratios and basic equations in the upper grades

Your child reviews the concepts in their current school unit and solves key problems to show they understand them.

    See math concepts by grade
  • English

English stories, explanatory and compare-and-contrast writing, grammar and paragraph editing

Your child sums up what they read in their own sentences and uses written corrections to decide what to fix first.

See English classes for international school students
  • Science

School science units, from nature, weather, plants, and animals to forces, energy, and ecosystems

Your child reads pictures, tables, and experiment results and explains what changed, with evidence.

How your child's G1–6 class plan takes shape

First, we check whether your child's school follows the US, UK, IB PYP, or Korean curriculum.

  1. Choose the subjects they need

Tell us your child's school grade and the subjects you're worried about, and we'll choose classes together.

  2. Make a class plan

We use the diagnostic results to set a starting level and class plan for each subject.

  3. Use end-of-month assessments to set what's next

End-of-month assessments and quarterly MAP Test results show what to review and what to learn next.

We send you regular updates with results and instructor comments for each subject.
