Elementary students raising their hands in a classroom

G1–3 Book Club

Your child reads easy English chapter books all the way through on their own, then talks and writes in English about the plot and how they felt.

When they hit a word they don't know, they guess its meaning from the sentences around it. They answer the instructor's questions to check their understanding.

Who this level is for and the books your child reads

This level fits a child ready to move from picture books to books with more text. Your child finishes whole English books on their own and builds a steady reading habit.

  1. Read, guessing unfamiliar words from the sentences around them
  2. Answer the instructor's questions about the plot and context
  3. Lay out the plot and key events in a mind map or worksheet
  4. Say and write in English how they felt, separately from retelling the plot
  5. Get written corrections and rewrite

Homework after class

After class, your child has homework: reading the book and summarizing what happened.

Book responses and worksheets show how well your child reads

We look at whether your child understands and can explain what they read, and what help they need to put their ideas into words.

Your child's English responses and worksheets go into a portfolio, and you get the instructor's comments too. See how parents get progress updates
