G7–8 Math Lab

Your child learns the grades 7–8 units from Korean textbooks first, then works through the same units again with English problems from US and UK textbooks.

Units cover integers and rational numbers, variables and expressions, linear equations and linear functions, and basic geometry. On written-answer and proof problems, your child writes out the solution in sentences.

What your child learns in grades 7–8

Once your child can solve school math on their own and explain it, they also take on math competition problems such as AMC 8 and AMC 10.

Your child learns each unit from Korean textbooks and from English textbooks

Korean G7–8 units

  • Integers and rational numbers
  • Variables and expressions
  • Linear equations and functions
  • Basic geometry

English textbooks for the same units

  • US Pre-Algebra
  • US Algebra 1
  • UK KS3 Math

Functions unit: linear functions and their English terms

In grades 7–8, your child learns up to linear functions. Quadratic functions and their graphs come next, in Grade 9.

English terms your child learns alongside linear functions

From the textbook

  • Writing linear function equations
  • Drawing graphs
  • Reading what equations and graphs mean

English terms learned alongside

  • Function
  • Independent / Dependent Variable
  • Slope / Intercept

Solve independently, then redo mistakes

After the basic problems, your child moves on to applied and challenge problems, sometimes mixing algebra and geometry.

What your child practices in grades 7–8

  • Deriving formulas

Your child derives the textbook formulas for equations, functions, and shapes, then proves them.

  • Solving English word problems

Your child reads long word problems in English, finds the conditions, and turns them into equations.

  • Filling in missing concepts first

If a concept from an earlier grade is missing, your child goes back to that unit and relearns it first.

  • Finding the error and trying again

Your child finds why an answer was wrong and redoes that problem type until they can solve and explain it alone.

Write out solutions in sentences

Your child practices the written-answer and proof-style questions that show up on school tests.

Writing a solution or proof, step by step

  1. Find the answerANSWER
  2. Write in sentences why they set up the equation that wayREASON
  3. Back up each step with a rule of calculation or a property of shapesJUSTIFY
  4. Write geometry proofs from start to finishPROVE
